Traffics and Discoveries

by Rudyard Kipling

Stories from 1904, when Kipling had left India behind for England and was writing more strangely. “They” is a ghost story of a Sussex house full of children who are never quite seen, written a few years after the death of his own daughter Josephine. “Mrs Bathurst”, about a woman glimpsed in a newsreel at Cape Town, is famous for leaving out nearly everything a reader wants to know.
