Three Lives

by Gertrude Stein

Three women in a city called Bridgepoint: the good Anna and the gentle Lena, both German servants, and Melanctha, a young Black woman whose long story fills the middle of the book. Stein had it printed at her own expense in 1909. It is written in repetitions, the way people circle a thought.
