Philosophical Dictionary

by Voltaire

Voltaire’s pocket dictionary of 1764, alphabetical and merciless, on superstition, fanaticism, tolerance and the follies of theologians. It was burned in Geneva and condemned in Paris, and he denied writing it. In 1766 a copy was burned at Abbeville with the body of the young Chevalier de La Barre, executed for blasphemy.
