Gargantua and Pantagruel

by François Rabelais

The giant Gargantua, his son Pantagruel and their friend Panurge eat, drink, argue and go to sea, in five books of glorious excess. The theologians of the Sorbonne condemned it as obscene. Rabelais, a monk turned physician, first published it under an anagram of his name, Alcofribas Nasier.
