The Library After Dark

Contested

Jurgen

by James Branch Cabell

A middle-aged pawnbroker is given back a year of his youth and spends it travelling through legend, Heaven and Hell, charming queens and goddesses on the way. In 1920 the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice had Cabell’s comedy seized for its double meanings. The case took two years to fail, and made the book famous.
