Ghosts

by Henrik Ibsen

Mrs Alving has spent her life hiding what her husband was, and builds an orphanage in his name; then her son comes home from Paris carrying his father’s inheritance. Ibsen’s play of 1881 was refused by the theatres of Scandinavia and first staged in Chicago, in Norwegian. A London newspaper called it “an open drain.”
