Journey

The Great Lone Land

by William Francis Butler

William Francis Butler, a young Irish officer from Tipperary, joined the Red River Expedition of 1870 and was then sent across the prairies of the Saskatchewan, in winter, to report on the state of the North-West. He went by horse and by dog-sled as far as Rocky Mountain House, and the name he gave the country, the great lone land, stuck to it. He became a general, and married the painter Elizabeth Thompson, who painted The Roll Call.
