The Impending Crisis of the South

by Hinton Rowan Helper

Hinton Rowan Helper, a white North Carolinian, argued in 1857 that slavery was ruining the poor white farmers of the South. Southern states banned it, and in North Carolina a minister was convicted for circulating it. Endorsing it cost John Sherman the Speakership of the House.
