Journey

The Path to Rome

by Hilaire Belloc

In 1901 Hilaire Belloc set out on foot from Toul, in Lorraine, where he had done his military service, vowing to walk to Rome in a straight line and to hear Mass every morning on the way. He kept the line for as long as the Alps allowed, and the snow turned him back from at least one pass. The book, of 1902, is a mixture of wandering, argument, drawings and conversations with an imaginary reader called Lector.
