Oliver Twist

by Charles Dickens

An orphan asks for more soup and is punished for the audacity of it, then falls in with a gang of pickpockets who are, at minimum, honest about what they are. Dickens wrote it to make polite society look directly at a workhouse it preferred not to. It remains uncomfortable reading, on purpose.
