Bleak House

by Charles Dickens

A lawsuit over an inheritance drags on so long that it eventually consumes the entire fortune it was meant to distribute, along with several of the lives waiting on its outcome. Dickens used one endless court case to indict an entire legal system’s capacity for patient, grinding cruelty. The fog that opens the book never really lifts.
