The Kreutzer Sonata

by Leo Tolstoy

On a long train journey a man tells a stranger how he came to kill his wife, and why he blames marriage itself. Tolstoy’s story of 1889 was forbidden by the Russian censor, and in 1890 the United States Post Office refused to carry newspapers that printed it. Beethoven’s sonata, which sets things off, is innocent.
