The Arabian Nights

by Edward Forster

Antoine Galland’s Mille et une nuits, published in twelve volumes from 1704 to 1717, was the first translation of the Nights into a European language, and the book that made them a European classic. For a century most English readers knew the stories through his French, in translations like this one by Edward Forster, first published in 1802. Galland added tales that no Arabic manuscript of his time contained, among them Aladdin and Ali Baba.
