The Mesnevi

by Rumi

Jalal al-Din Rumi’s Masnavi, some twenty-five thousand couplets of stories and teaching, begins with the song of a reed flute grieving for the reed bed it was cut from. James Redhouse, who ran away to sea as a boy and became the greatest English scholar of Turkish, translated its first book in 1881. Rumi died at Konya in 1273, where the dervishes of his order still turn.
