The Library After Dark

Poetry

Tales

by George Crabbe

George Crabbe, a clergyman who grew up in Aldeburgh in Suffolk, published these twenty-one stories in verse in 1812: plain lives, told without any sentiment. Fanny Price keeps his Tales in the East room at Mansfield Park, among her plants and her books. Austen admired Crabbe so much that her family remembered her joking that she would like to be Mrs Crabbe.
