With Axe and Rope in the New Zealand Alps
Read it in the Library After Dark Or read it as plain textGeorge Mannering and his friend Marmaduke Dixon taught themselves to climb in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, and in 1890 came within a short distance of the summit of Aoraki / Mount Cook before they had to turn back. This book of 1891 tells of that climb and others, and Mannering helped to found the New Zealand Alpine Club the same year. The first ascent of the mountain was made on Christmas Day 1894, by Tom Fyfe, Jack Clarke and George Graham.
