Principles of Geology

by Charles Lyell

Charles Lyell argued that the earth had been shaped by the same slow causes still at work, rain and frost and earthquake, given time enough. Darwin took the first volume with him on the Beagle, a gift from FitzRoy, and read the landscapes of South America by it. Lyell became his friend and adviser, and it was to Lyell that he sent Wallace’s essay in 1858.
