The Library After Dark

Wonder

Sylvie and Bruno Concluded

by Lewis Carroll

The second half of Carroll’s last novel, published in 1893, in which a visitor called Mein Herr describes his country’s map, made on the scale of a mile to the mile. The farmers objected that it would cover the country and shut out the sunlight, so now they use the country itself as its own map, and it does nearly as well. Borges told a sterner version of the same story half a century later.
