The Library After Dark

Wonder

The Golden Asse

by Apuleius

Lucius, too curious about magic, rubs on the wrong ointment and is turned into an ass, and goes through a long run of misadventures before the goddess Isis restores him. Apuleius was born at Madauros in Numidia, in what is now Algeria, in the second century, and his Metamorphoses is the only Latin novel to survive complete. This is William Adlington’s translation of 1566, with the story of Cupid and Psyche in the middle of it.
