Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town

by Stephen Leacock

Stephen Leacock’s little town of Mariposa was so plainly Orillia, Ontario, where he spent his summers, that not everyone there was pleased. Its steamer, the Mariposa Belle, sinks on the Knights of Pythias excursion and settles on the bottom of Lake Wissanotti, which is not very deep there, and its barber makes a fortune in mining shares and loses it. Leacock taught economics at McGill University in Montreal, and was for years the best-known humorist writing in English.
