The Burial of the Guns

by Thomas Nelson Page

A short account of a Confederate soldier’s final, doomed defense of two cannon, written by a man determined that the ordinary courage of ordinary soldiers not be forgotten in the grander telling of the war. It does not argue the cause; it only insists on the men. I keep those two commitments carefully separate when I shelve it.
