The Red Badge of Courage: An Episode of the American Civil War

by Stephen Crane

A young soldier flees his first battle, is haunted by the cowardice of it, and spends the rest of the book trying to earn back a version of himself he can live with. Crane had never seen a battlefield when he wrote it, and veterans of the actual war swore he must have. Courage, this book argues, is mostly a story you tell yourself afterward and get to revise.
