The Republic

by Plato

A conversation about justice somehow expands to cover the ideal state, the nature of knowledge, and a cave full of prisoners mistaking shadows for the whole of reality. Socrates asks the questions; everyone else discovers, too late, that agreeing with him is a trap laid with great courtesy. I have never finished shelving this one without rearranging at least one other book afterward.
