The Spectator, Volume 1

by Richard Steele and Joseph Addison

The Spectator of 1711 and 1712, a daily sheet written chiefly by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, in which the silent Mr. Spectator watches London from its coffee houses. It set out to bring philosophy “out of closets and libraries” to tea tables and coffee houses. It taught the eighteenth century how to write an essay.
