Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám

by Omar Khayyám

Edward FitzGerald’s free English version of quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyám, the Persian astronomer and mathematician. It went almost unsold in 1859 until copies were found in a London bookseller’s penny box and passed round by Rossetti and his friends. “A Book of Verses underneath the Bough, A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread—and Thou.”
