The Song of Hiawatha

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Longfellow’s long poem of 1855, set among the Ojibwe on the southern shore of Lake Superior, in a drumming metre he borrowed from the Finnish Kalevala. It drew on Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s collections of Ojibwe stories, and on Longfellow’s imagination at least as much. It was an enormous success, and enormously parodied.
