Biography

Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans

by Plutarch

Plutarch, a Greek writer and a priest at Delphi, paired the lives of famous Greeks and Romans around the year 100, setting a statesman or soldier of one people beside one of the other. Shakespeare took Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus from them, in Thomas North’s translation. This is the translation called Dryden’s, as revised by Arthur Hugh Clough.
