Biography

Memoir of Jane Austen

by James Edward Austen-Leigh

Her nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh, who had known her when he was a boy, wrote this memoir half a century after her death, with the help of his sisters and cousins. It gave the world the creaking door, the small sheets of paper and the aunt who was everybody’s favourite, and it began the first great wave of interest in her. It is also, as the family meant it to be, discreet.
