Biography

Jane Austen’s Sailor Brothers

by J. H. Hubback and Edith C. Hubback

Two of Jane’s brothers, Francis and Charles, went to sea as boys, fought through the wars with France and both became admirals. John Hubback, Francis’s grandson, and his daughter Edith told their story in 1906 from their letters and logs. It is the best guide there is to the navy of Mansfield Park and Persuasion, and to the officers Austen knew.
