The Library After Dark

Contested

Sister Carrie

by Theodore Dreiser

A country girl comes to Chicago, finds factory work hard and men easy, and rises on the New York stage while the man who ruined himself for her goes down. Dreiser’s publisher, Doubleday, wished it had never signed for it in 1900, and printed it and barely sold it. It is now counted among the great American novels.
