The Turn of the Screw

by Henry James

A governess is left in sole charge of two children in a house that may or may not be haunted by the household’s previous, disgraced staff. James never once confirms whether the ghosts are real or whether the governess has simply frightened herself into seeing them. That refusal to resolve it is the entire point, and it has unsettled readers for over a century precisely because of it.
