Daisy Miller: A Study

by Henry James

An American woman abroad charms and scandalises European society in roughly equal measure, mostly by declining to perform the caution expected of her. James never quite decides whether she is innocent or merely fearless, and the ambiguity is the whole portrait. Society, in this one, punishes her less for what she does than for how little she pretends to care about being watched.
