The Canterville Ghost

by Oscar Wilde

An American diplomat buys an English country house, ghost included, and his family flatly refuse to be frightened. The ancient bloodstain is scrubbed away with Pinkerton’s Champion Stain Remover, the ghost is offered lubricator for his rattling chains, and the twins set traps for him. Wilde plays it for laughs until, quite suddenly, he doesn’t.
