The Library After Dark

Poetry

Elene; Judith; Athelstan, or the Fight at Brunanburh; Byrhtnoth, or the Fight at Maldon; and the Dream of the Rood

by James M. Garnett

Garnett’s collection translates several Old English poems, including The Battle of Maldon. The manuscript containing Maldon was destroyed in the Cotton Library fire of 1731, but a transcript made beforehand preserved the surviving text. The burnt binding here is imagined; this readable volume is a later translation, not the lost manuscript.
