The Library After Dark

Philosophy

On Liberty

by John Stuart Mill

Mill’s essay of 1859 argues that the only reason for which power may rightly be used over anyone, against their will, is to prevent harm to others. He dedicated it to the memory of his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, whose thinking he said was in all of it. Its chapter on freedom of thought is quoted whenever that freedom is in trouble.
