Common Sense

by Thomas Paine

A blunt, furious pamphlet arguing that a colony’s loyalty to a distant king made no more sense than any other accident of birth, published anonymously and read by nearly everyone regardless. Paine wrote plainly, on purpose, for readers who had no patience for finer rhetoric. Few pamphlets in history have moved this many people to action this quickly.
