The Life of the Spider

by Jean-Henri Fabre

Jean-Henri Fabre, a schoolmaster in Provence, spent decades watching insects and spiders on his own patch of waste ground, which he called the harmas. His Souvenirs entomologiques, of which this is a part in English, are as much stories as observations. Darwin, in the Origin, called him an inimitable observer.
