Vanity Fair

by William Makepeace Thackeray

A novel about London society with, notoriously, no single character in it actually worth admiring. Thackeray called it a novel without a hero on the title page, so you cannot say he did not warn you. Becky Sharp, the least admirable of the lot, remains the only one anybody actually remembers fondly.
