Cranford

by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

A small English town’s genteel, mostly female society manages scandal, poverty, and each other with an etiquette so precise it becomes its own kind of comedy. Gaskell clearly adored these women even while gently laughing at them. Nothing much happens in it, deliberately, and that restraint is the entire craft.
