The King in Yellow

by Robert W. Chambers

A banned play is said to drive anyone who finishes reading it slowly, irreversibly mad, and the linked stories in this collection are mostly about people who cannot resist finding out whether that is true. Chambers never lets you read the actual forbidden play yourself, which is precisely why it has haunted other writers for over a century since. I do not keep a copy of the play itself. Ask no further questions about that.
