The Library After Dark

Gothic

The Italian

by Ann Radcliffe

Vincentio di Vivaldi falls in love with Ellena at a church in Naples, and his mother and her confessor, the monk Schedoni, set out to stop the match by any means. Radcliffe’s last novel in her lifetime came out in three volumes in 1797, and this is the first. Schedoni, cowled and terrible, is the villain the others were measured against.
