Uncle Silas
Read it in the Library After Dark Or read it as plain textWhen her father dies, young Maud Ruthyn is sent to live with her uncle Silas, a man once suspected of murder, in his decaying house in Derbyshire. Le Fanu turns the terms of a will into a slow-closing trap. Madame de la Rougierre, the governess, is one of the most unsettling figures in Victorian fiction.
