The Library After Dark

Novel

Evelina

by Fanny Burney

Fanny Burney published her first novel anonymously in 1778, and at first even her father did not know she had written it. Evelina, brought up quietly in the country, comes to London and writes home about the mortifications of balls, theatres and pleasure gardens. Austen read Burney all her life, and defended her by name in Northanger Abbey.
