The Library After Dark

Novel

Botchan

by Natsume Sōseki

A hot-headed young man from Tokyo takes a post teaching mathematics at a country school on Shikoku, where his pupils torment him and his colleagues outmanoeuvre him. Natsume Sōseki wrote it in 1906, out of his own year as a teacher in Matsuyama. It is still one of the most widely read novels in Japan.
