The Library After Dark

Satire

The Book of Snobs

by William Makepeace Thackeray

Thackeray’s sketches for Punch in 1846 and 1847, sorting the snobs of England into kinds: royal, military, clerical, university, city and country. They first appeared as by “One of Themselves”, and he means it. Vanity Fair, which followed, is the same joke at the length of a novel.
