A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

by James Joyce

Stephen Dedalus grows up in Catholic Ireland, and the language of the book grows up with him, from nursery talk to the arguments of a proud young aesthete. It ends with Stephen leaving to forge “the uncreated conscience of my race”. The sermon on hell in the middle is famously terrifying.
