The Yellow Book, an Illustrated Quarterly. Vol. 1, April 1894

by Henry Harland

The first volume of The Yellow Book, the notorious quarterly of 1894, with drawings by Aubrey Beardsley and a story by Henry James. It was yellow because French novels were, and French novels were wicked. When Oscar Wilde was arrested he was said to be carrying a yellow book, and the magazine never recovered, although he never wrote for it.
