Novel

Maria Chapdelaine(eBook #4383)

by Louis Hémon

Louis Hémon, a young Breton who came to Quebec in 1911, spent the summer of 1912 working on a farm at Péribonka by Lake St John, and wrote this novel of the settlers there. He was killed by a train in northern Ontario in July 1913, before it was published. Maria must choose between three men, and between staying on the land and leaving for the cities of the United States, and William Hume Blake’s translation of 1921 made her known in English.
