Atlantis

by Ignatius Donnelly

Ignatius Donnelly, a congressman from Minnesota, argued in this book of 1882 that Atlantis was real, and that every ancient civilisation, from Egypt to Peru, came from it. It sold enormously and has never been out of print, and almost every book about Atlantis since owes something to it. Donnelly went on to argue that Francis Bacon wrote Shakespeare.
