The Library After Dark

History

Arabian Society in the Middle Ages

by Edward William Lane

These are the notes Edward William Lane wrote for his translation of the Nights, gathered into a book of their own by his great-nephew Stanley Lane-Poole in 1883. They describe religion, magic, the jinn, women, slaves, food, music and the law as the tales take them for granted. They are Lane’s Cairo as much as Harun’s Baghdad.
